Thanks For The Insight! Assessed Activity 8.2

So What Do I Know?

Hello everyone. Firstly i would like to thank every single person who has taken the time to read at least one of my blog posts. I am saying this because this will be the last blog post for the digital learning technologies era of my blogging hobby.

All these posts have been for my digital learning technologies class. Another paper toward to my degree in I.T. The teacher has asked me to reflect on all the activities i have been blogging about, with the things i have learnt and what i liked or didn't like so much.

Happiness In A Qualification:

Firstly i have gained a vast amount of knowledge from this subject. One of my more memorable skills i have enjoyed acquiring is the power of the personal learning network. This has helped me tremendously. I have also learnt much about online audiences via a PLN. Because of my blog and other social media attachments i can build my audience around my interests and start to construct an audience who all have similar goals and learning styles.

Things Done Better:

Things that i feel could be generally improved in this course i feel are the sign ups to pages that only have one use. We would sign up to a page for an assessed activity but that was it. I also feel like sometimes one can almost have too much material like social media pages or blogging.  Everything in moderation i think. Apart from that i enjoyed the course. I really enjoy blogging.

Personal Notes:

For everyone that would like to stay in touch with my blog. I will be creating a fresh blog for the same class on an assignment. This blog is centered around KSP (Kerbal Space Program about tips, pointers and help in getting past the massive learning curve that is the game. Even after the assignment for this class i will continue to post, about my personal experiences with the game and the huge amounts i have learnt about space and rocket science! To the Mun!

I Want To Develop Games! Assessed Activity 8.1

Those Helpful Links:

  • Game Institute is an online training course where individuals can pay a $3,000 fee to complete a fully qualified, fully trained course to become a game developer. Many have been given jobs with major game companies, making some dreams a reality. I have chosen this site because the topic i have chosen is a learning based game, and i also have a deep passion for game development.

Creating Websites! Assessed Activity 6.1

An E Portfolio:

An E Portfolio is a collection of a users evidence which can include and not limited to; hyperlinks, images, electronic files and blog posts.

How is an E portfolio helpful to digital learning technologies? It is extremely helpful for a multitude of reasons. Firstly it can be extremely useful for the uses of PLN. An E portfolio can be shown to an audience which may grab their attention. So an E portfolio is useful as a learning tool to say the least.

Personal Learning Networks Assessed Activity 5.1.1 - 5.1.4

In this post i will be discussing my very own personal learning network, how i will be dealing with the overflow of information and am i actually using my PLN efficiently.

Information Overload:

With learning as a whole, one must know how to go about learning their selected information without getting bogged down by a massive amount of irrelevant nonsense. This could prove difficult in cases where an individual may be on Google scholar researching a topic, where this person finds an article on their topic, but in reality that author is writing about about something that might be related to the topic as a whole but discussing a very different aspect of said topic. This has happened to more times than someone would think.

The above problem can usually be found in two varieties; Online and in your local library.

Staying On Top:

Sometimes we all just want to find the information we need and get out of there. Quickly and efficiently. There are places on the internet (many social media sites) which house thousands or more communities for individuals to join a group with a common interest.. These interests can be from gaming to agriculture. The beauty of it is, is that a member of the online community can ask a question about that topic as a whole and more often than not, get the correct answer from another individual.

Hiding For All To See:

Now the next question is, what do i do with my PLN? Who do i talk to? Where do i show what i have learned?

I believe this answer is very simplistic. So simplistic it can be said in two words. Social Media. As discussed above social media can evolve very quickly with huge numbers. A great personal example i have to show is on one of my posts in this DLT blog. In my post "Learning With Games" i included a very much game based learning game. When i went to publish this post, i included the community that this game is related to. This community has over 50,000 members and therefore many individuals of the community have seen my post. Few have +1'd my post via my Google+  and therefore my views for that post have skyrocketed. Communities like these offer sound advice from the group which can help create or expand a personal learning network.

Finding time:

Finding time to effectively and efficiently use your PLN can be hard. I believe it also depends on how big your PLN is. There are both pros and cons to large PLN communities. Pros are that nearly all of the questions that are asked are more than likely to be answered correctly for that specific individual. A common con is that the information might not be 100% reliable. (Not always the case)

I believe a 'tight knit' PLN with small numbers of members that are committed to the learning would be more effective than a large group. (My personal opinion)

Below is a diagram of my PLN and how i effectively learn while engaging the community. :) Notice that a large portion of my PLN is social media. This is because of the communities social media has the ability to provide. Google+ keeps you in touch, Twitter is great for gaining followers that have the same interests. Blogger for writing about all your learnings and findings for the world to see and the rest is just general learning if you know how to use it.

Use it! Don't abuse it!

Teaching the Teachers Assessed activity 3.3

Teaching Teachers to Teach

Teacher, take a seat:

Teachers need to be taught. They need to be taught to teach, There are skills that they need to know to effectively teach a group of students, they must be able to communicate and assess their students just to name a couple. The skills will be broken up into fundamental skills and advanced skills.

Fundamental skills:

Teaching for good behavior
Reflective practice
Teaching learning and assessment methods
Introducing observational approaches for research.

These skills are not necessarily to do with IT but are needed to teach a class in general, effectively.

Intermediate Skills:

Concept centered training
Understanding online interaction
Blogs wikis and new media for learning
Communicating in cyberspace
Art and technology
Practical guidelines for using technology tools in the classroom

The intermediate skills are IT based but should be stacked on top of the fundamental skills also.

Advanced skills:

Understanding and evaluating education
K-12 leadership and the education administration curriculum
Ethical administrators
School business manager
School governor planning for improvement

These are all courses which can be taken for teachers to learn how to effectively teach.

Schooling DLT Itself Assessed Activity 3.1

The Implications of DLT In Schools

In this exciting blog post, I will be discussing the implications and needs for digital learning technology in education. I will discuss why it is needed, some problems or obstacles presented and the roles that they play inside educational facilities.

A few barriers I see:

With almost anything there are implications that will arise. So naturally if any sort of technology is going to be implemented anywhere, there needs to be protocols in place in case anything goes wrong. That's usually where support comes in.

If any technology is going to be implemented into an organisation there needs to be support for the infrastructure. This applies for both students and teachers in an educational institution. Teachers may use some technology for teaching material, but may not necessarily understand how to use it or utilise it to its full potential.

Help desk or IT support is a system where if a piece of software causes a student or teacher difficulty where it shouldn't, a team of help desk workers can strategically analyse and troubleshoot the problem by process of elimination. 9/10 times this results in a simple solution and the problem being solved. It is essential that organisations have software support to eliminate downtime as much as possible.

What position does it play?

Firstly I will be talking about wiki's. What does a wiki do in relation of DLT and what is it's role?

We all know what a wiki is. In relation to DLT a wiki is a place where a communal group can edit and read on one or many subjects. A wiki is important to DLT because it creates a gateway where like minded individuals can contribute to other peoples work. The contribution can be pure fact or opinionated.  Without a wiki there is a massive loss for the potential of learning.

Next is discussion forums. A good discussion forum is great for learning, especially for school assignments. A question is usually asked on the discussion forum and can be replied by a teacher or student. This is a great way to get different aspects on subjects from different people. Like the wiki it is a communal page that everyone can edit. (may need a sign up or account creation) but can create a strong discussion with students and teachers having an input, which can help with assignments and many other things.
